Oreo Truffles

My posting is a day behind this week! Sorry about that. Things have been busy lately--most of the past two days have been spent getting Adiel's room ready, sorting through baby stuff, washing up baby clothes, and trying to reorganize some of the storage around the house ("nesting" I think is the word!). We leave for Thailand in less than 2 weeks. But, here it is...a WONDERFUL, EASY candy recipe that you might have time to throw together before Christmas! If you haven't noticed the other candy recipes on here, like Peanut Butter Cups and Peppermint Patties, you should definitely try them! These 3 recipes were the main ones I included in Christmas goodie bags for some friends this year. Hope you enjoy!

Oreo Truffles
About 36 oreos (I use 3 pks in Asia)
1 8oz block cream cheese (homemade should work!)
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate or whatever type you'd like to use (dark, milk, combination...)
1-2 Tbs shortening or butter

Blend Oreos to a powder using food processor or blender (I would not recommend double stuffed if those are available to you, though the chocolate filled ones were good!).

Mix together Oreo crumbs and softened cream cheese until all the crumbs are worked in. Shape into 1 inch balls.

Melt chocolate and shortening or butter together in the microwave, 30 seconds at a time and stirring after each. Be careful not to over cook the chocolate. Dip Oreo balls into the melted chocolate one at a time, using a fork to shake off excess chocolate before putting on wax paper, parchment paper, or something like a Silpat to cool and harden.

Variations: I was trying to conserve a bit of my chocolate as I was making these this year, so I just took the plain Oreo ball and pressed a few Andes mint chips into the top. I think you could do this with multiple things. Consider rolling them in toffee bits, chopped nuts, coconut or sprinkles. You can also dip into melted white chocolate or drizzle it over the tops.

For those of you in my city or other places around China, have you seen the holiday Oreos?? My kids think they are so cool. I feel like I'm in America! Too bad there aren't mint ones though!

  1. Vip loves to make these, we had them at their house on several occassions!....I am afraid I love them too much!!
Tonight I made cake balls...have you ever tried those? You bake a cake (I did chocolate) and then let it cool and mix creme cheese frosting and then roll into balls and dip in chocolate. Essentially the same recipe, but you can do any cake mix and any frosting...here is the link that had a ton of ideas:

This might be too much info...but I loved them and can't wait to try a different combo! :)

  3. Oh My Goodness! That is SUCH a great idea! I'm not in country this year but I'm totally going to try it next year! Can you post the link for the taobao seller you got the molds from????

  4. We were actually not very pleased with the mold we purchased. It was only 15 kuai, so can't complain! We didn't come up with the idea in time to spend time looking up better options. We also purchased boxes on Taobao and next year I will need to get another mold, probably a bit smaller than the one I used this time, to fit in the boxes better. If we find a good one, I'll put the link on here. :)
