Since there is a birthday at our house this week, I thought I'd stay in the birthday spirit and post a party idea. I've neglected this through the holidays, but I'd like to get back to sharing a few party ideas about once a month this year! This is probably one of the more fun parties we've done as far as planning went. We did it when our oldest son turned 6 this past year. Its kind of sad, but most of the rock star themed party ideas I found online were for girls (Hannah Montana and such). So here's what we did for a boy. There is so much you could do to have fun with this! If you have other ideas please share them in the comments!
Rock Star Party
Invitation
I found a link online for making a concert ticket and plugged all the information in for our party! SUPER easy and totally fun! I printed them on cardstock. We took a sharp-tipped knife and perforated the end of it to really look like a ticket, too.
The Cake
A rock star needs a guitar! In fact, this whole party theme came out of Micah wanting a guitar cake.
I used dark brown M&M's on the head and down at the bottom to look like tuners and the knobs that hold in the strings. Micah wanted his cake to look like Brian's guitar but you could totally have fun with this and make it fun colors or like an electric. I used a pattern for cutting my 9x13 cake into pieces that would shape like the guitar. I did enlarge the top part of the body of the guitar from the pattern as I liked how it looked better that way.
Games and Activities
When our guests arrived, they met a bouncer at the door. A sign on the door said "Back Stage: No Access." He gave them backstage all access passes to wear. I bought cheap conference type name tags on a lanyard at a local stationary store. We just printed a little thing to go in it with Micah's picture and it said "All Access Pass" on it.
Hair and Make-up-I had lots of hair gel, bandanas, make-up, and such for some friends to use to help the kids look the rock star part! I found some great magnetic spike earrings and bracelets and the bandanas for cheap on taobao.
Make a Music Video--My husband, the musician, loved getting this party planned. In fact, he did most of the activity planning. We thought it'd be fun to make a music video as part of the party. That actually ended up being the main thing we did. We bought a large piece of bright green material and Brian stretched it onto a simple, cheap wood frame. That became our green screen! Brian downloaded some free green screen backgrounds from Youtube or somewhere. I had bought cheap inflatable guitars and microphones on this taobao store (like OTC). These were used by the kids for the video and as a party favor! If you'd like to see our video, you can watch it here (the password is in the body of the post).
Learn to be a Rock Star--For most of the video footage, Brian just combined it from when the kids were learning how to be a "rock star" from a musician friend of ours. Most of the kids at the party had been to a couple of his concerts at local coffee shops. He did We Will Rock You and a Journey song with the kids! Ha! He also taught them to strum and jump like a rock star. Then we did some video outtakes with the kids for all the jumping shots.
Musical Chairs or Name that Tune - I think these two games or other music related games would go great with this party.
Make guitars--We did not do this, but if you had crafty kids that would have fun with this, they could make their own guitars. Have pre-cut cardboard guitars, paint, glitter, sequins, etc and let the kids have at it!
CD Cover Art--Take styled photos with the kids like you would for a CD sleeve! You could use these in your thank you notes or if you made a recording or DVD of the music the kids did at the party!
Food Ideas
I had a sign by the food table that said "Green Room." I just did some simple snacks to go along with the cake. You can barely see in the picture some watermelon star pops I did. I just sliced watermelon about an inch thick, cut out a star with a cookie cutter, stuck it with a popsicle stick and froze them. I also did some pretzels and other junk food. Pizza would be a great idea for a meal.

I actually did a rockstar party as an adult and it was a blast. I know that the resources are different because I did it in America, but it was still a great time. We had rockstar energy drinks, sang karaoke, played rock band, and then did a fun photo shoot. We also did the fake tattoos and a makeup booth. It was a blast!
