Jalapeno Poppers are a favorite of ours when we see them on restaurant menus. Mind you that is not that common over here! I'd make my own if I could get decent jalapenos to grow. But I've been unsuccessful so far. But this Christmas season I finally got around to making my version of Jalapeno Popper Dip that is all over recipe blogs. With all its expensive/imported ingredients, it's a special occasion kind of dip, but that's what the holidays are right?! I had several requests for this from people who ate it at my house. So here it is! Just in time for New Year's Eve. See all my China-friendly notes at the bottom. Enjoy!
Jalapeno Dip
500g cream cheese, softened*
3/4 cup mayo
1/4 cup diced jalapenos or other spicy pepper
2-3 cloves garlic, pressed
1/2 tsp cumin
1 - 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
~1 cup bread crumbs
1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese
Cream together cream cheese, mayo, jalapenos, garlic, cumin and cheese. Spread into a greased pie plate or similar. Top with bread crumbs and parmesan cheese. Bake at 375F (195C) for 20 minutes or until browned and sizzling a bit around the edges. Serve with chips, crackers or little French bread toasts.
Notes: My cream cheese comes in 250 or 500 g pieces so I used that. If using 16 oz of cream cheese you could put a full cup of mayo. I used imported jarred jalapenos from taobao. I buy my Parmesan in a block that can be grated like this one from taobao guy in my city. It grates to more than 3 cups I think. The green bottle kind would work as well, or you could just entirely leave it off without too much harm to the dish! I have only tried this with white cheddar cheese, but I would think gouda or mozzarella would also work. Use what you have!
