Homemade Tortilla Chips

Here where I live, import stores carry Tostitos chips, but they also cost about $6 for a bag. Sometimes its just worth it for the convenience or the taste of home, but more often than not, I just make our own chips and salsa when we have Mexican meals. This is just a quick little "how to" for both baked or fried chips.

Homemade Tortilla Chips
Batch of tortillas (any recipe should work fine!)
Salt
Oil for frying

Fried:
Cut tortillas into strips or triangles. Preheat oil to a good frying temperature--you can test it with one chip. Throw about 1 tortilla worth of chips into oil at a time. Fry until golden. This will only take about a minute, maybe 2. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Sprinkle salt on hot chips. Note: You can do this with corn tortillas as well, and even shape them like taco shells by holding them with tongs as you fry them, I just can't make corn tortillas as I don't have the type corn meal/flour you need.

Baked:
Preheat oven to 325F (165C). Cut tortillas into strips or triangles. Layer on a baking sheet. You can spritz (using an Oil Mister) or brush with oil if you want. Sprinkle on salt or other desired seasoning (salt will stick ok without it, but not great). Bake for 10 minutes or so, until browning on the edges and crisp.

Fun idea--I had some lime juice powder from our last trip to Thailand. Last time I baked chips I sprinkled that and salt over them and made my own "hint of lime" chips!! Thanks to Liz L. for the idea!
