Tropical Fruit Sorbet

I asked on Facebook last week about how many of my blog readers have ice cream makers. A lot of you that said you did don't actually live overseas! But a lot of you who said you did DO actually live overseas. A friend and I were talking the other day and we say that bringing out an ice cream maker is a must-do!! Even if you have to run it on a converter! Just makes for some fun times with family and others when you don't have good ice cream options locally. Mine is a Cuisinart 2 quart maker. Its the kind that you freeze the inner part and then put it into the electric part of the machine--so no ice and salt! Perfect for us. If you're interested in types of ice cream makers people are bringing out, please just start some dialogue in the comments! ALSO...I'm going to have an upcoming post on making ice cream WITHOUT a machine, so stay tuned for that! But I wanted to get you this recipe as its one that takes advantage of fresh fruits that are so GOOD and doesn't require expensive whipping cream! This stuff is so yummy!

Tropical Fruit Sorbet
3 bananas
1 small pineapple
2 small-medium mangos
1 1/2 cups orange juice
3/4-1 cup sugar
4 Tbs coconut juice or milk
2 Tbs lemon or lime juice

Peel all fruit. Chop into smaller pieces. Put all the fruit, liquids, and sugar into blender and pulse until smooth. Refrigerate until cold. Freeze according to ice cream maker instructions. It might be a little runny but just make it a couple hours before you need it and stick in the freezer to harden up a bit. This amount filled my 2 qt machine full but it froze pretty good!

Notes: I used coconut juice from a little black can that I found at the grocery store with all the other juices and drinks. It was sweetened--so I probably could have used a little less sugar. Just regular coconut milk would work I think. I used 100% orange juice (HuiYuan in the green box) for drinking--I think fresh squeezed would be great, too. I think you could do less banana and more mango or whatever amounts suit you on the fruit. The mix of these flavors was great though. Enjoy!

  1. Not sure how your Asian capital is, but ours (if you know where to look) you can sometimes find non-typical appliances in. I don't have an ice-cream maker, but I wouldn't be surprised if an appliance store in the capital had one. Probably not a wide range of selection (no doubt, I'll get one choice:) but if you happen to be going to your own capital, or one in a neighboring country that may be bigger, check it out! I imagine the ease of not having to use a converter and maybe putting a little more effort into looking around/leg work IN Asia, is about the same effort as waiting-on an ice cream maker to make it's way to you from the States and then using a converter with it over here. Keeping my fingers crossed that there will be one somewhere here! If not, parents bringing one in a suitcase and converters it is!! I love sorbets! And tropical fruit is always available in the tropics...and the heat always demands ice cream! Sounds like a win-win-win if I can just find a maker.

  2. If you live in China, like me, Taobao.com is my go-to place for things like this. I just searched 冰淇凌机 on there and came up with a ton of options--from very cheap to pricey imported Cuisinart ones to expensive soft-serve machines like KFC would have. This one looked like it might be a reasonable option available though: http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=1304452451&ali_refid=a3_420434_1006:1102258180:6:%B1%F9%BC%A4%C1%E8%BB%FA:98772bfbec1ed6f6a495b934beb219ad&ali_trackid=1_98772bfbec1ed6f6a495b934beb219ad It looks like it has the middle part that you freeze and the price seemed reasonable!
