China Shopping Tip: Chicken and Vegetable Broth

I know in a perfect world that we'd all make our own chicken or vegetable stock and fill our freezers as we head into good, fall, soup weather! Reality is it takes time, energy, and freezer space we just may not have! Despite all my good intentions, I often end up just using the local chicken granules in water in any recipe calling for chicken broth or stock. And I hate it too--it has very little depth to its flavor and it contains mostly MSG. Enter new find--

For months I've noticed a few newer items in the sauce and spice aisle at my local grocery store. I just have not had time to look at them (many of you have probably known about this forever!). A couple weeks ago I actually picked up one of these 1 liter boxes that looked like it would be chicken broth. Looking at the side it seems to be made by Campbells and even says "Swanson" on it. AND from all I can tell (and from asking the aisle clerk), it does not contain MSG. (I did not translate every ingredient but it does not say "weijing" anywhere).  They also carried a vegetable and pork version. I did not see beef but I wouldn't be surprised if its out there as well.

It is definitely more flavorful than the granules. Its also a lot saltier, so if you start using this you may want to add the salt called for in recipes in small amounts to make sure its not over salted.

Any other fun finds?
