Shopping Tidbit--Ikea Chocolate

I know a lot of you readers live in China. And Ikea is taking China by storm. But wait! Ikea is taking the world by storm, so a lot more than just the China readers might benefit from this post. I even noticed an Ikea in Bangkok when I was there last month. Isn't that new? Okay, so there are some huge perks about Ikea, but let me just talk about one today. Their chocolate. In the grocery section of the store, you'll find chocolate bars--dark, milk, and hazelnut. At least here in China, the bars cost Y8.90 for 100g. This is nearly half the price of any other chocolate bars that I'm aware of (like Dove, Hershey's, and Le Conte). While I've heard some say they don't love it for just eating (my husband doesn't care!), this Ikea chocolate works great for melting. I almost always stock up on a bunch of the dark and milk chocolate bars before Christmas and use it when making Reese's Cups, Peppermint Patties, and Oreo Truffles. It works great for the Reese's Eggs or Bars, too. Save a little money stocking up on these for the Snickers Peanut Butter Cookies or Brownies or for topping Mint Brownies as well! Sometimes I mix it with semi-sweet chocolate chips, but sometimes I just use it by itself (mix one of each and you have semi-sweet!). I wish Ikea had sponsored this endorsement, but no, I just like saving a little money on their chocolate for my baking and thought you might, too! Try them for yourselves if you live near Ikea or stock up with you're just passing through!

totally random question... is it just Ikea brand chocolate? Do you know if it has any other brand on it? just curious about it being Fair Trade or not. We're researching ways to buy fair trade chocolate so I'm curious about Ikea's chocolate! :)

  2. Yeah, April--Its just Ikea brand chocolate. I don't have one in my cabinet right now to look but I don't remember there being much more information on it than that! I just looked on their website, too but no information on there either.

  6. These dark chocolate chips are so good! They are even better than Ghirardelli chocolate chips. The price is good too and it is even cheaper than cutting up Ikea chocolate bars! It is not certified fair trade, but I read about the company and it seems like they are a decent company and do have a program in place to help improve the lives of the cocoa farmers and are not exploiting them. My friend recommended buying a whole bag because once they bought the pre-divided one and it was fake. http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.36.o96fdd&id=37570577229&ns=1&abbucket=12#detail
