For the past 3 1/2 years I've lived just down the street from a little Korean import store. Every once in awhile I run in to buy some Ritz-like crackers or a bag of sugar if I've run out from my regular supplier. Several of my friends buy their Post brand cereals--they have Frosted Flakes for what I think is the cheapest available here. We've bought some lately with all the moving craziness in our house. Last night though, I was wanting to get some corn syrup for holiday baking. I looked up Karo on Taobao-there was only one or two sellers that had it. So I found the Chinese name for it (玉米糖浆) on their sites. I happened to search just this and a lot of Korean brands popped up. For WAY cheaper than Karo is. So I figured I'd check out the Korean store by my house before buying off Taobao. They had it! Three different brands varying in price and size. I bought 2 different ones to try them out (big bottle is 1200g and Y15 and smaller bottle is 700g for Y16).
Yes, I will be making all kinds of things with corn syrup in the coming weeks! My holiday baking (wait, year-round baking!) just took a big turn for the better seeing how I don't have to rule out recipes calling for corn syrup now! Yeah!!! I don't think I can even make the homemade substitute (which doesn't work in everything....like these) for this price! So if you live in China, head to your local Korean store or hit up Taobao for corn syrup!
*For those in or passing through my city, I found this at a little Korean Store on GaoShengQiao Nan Jie near the gate into LuoFu ShiJia. It has a green sign and says something like Well-Being Mart in English.

Korean stores are the best! I live in Qingdao so we have a huge Korean population and a lot of little Korean stores all around. In addition to corn syrup, I buy BekSul brown sugar. It's granulated but I like the flavor a lot better than the Chinese brown sugar. They have light and dark brown varieties. In Qingdao, a 3kg bag is about 40 kuai.
ReplyDeleteThe store here sells a 1kg bag for 17 I think, which is cheaper than the Taikoo Brand that Metro sells. Chengdu is farther from Korea I guess!
ReplyDeleteYeah! Our campus has a tiny Korean import store and sure enough, when I checked, they had it! Thanks Sara Beth!
